Home (The Gambia)

This video attempts to share the different facets of Gambian culture through visuals and testimonials gathered during my two and a half years there. It attempts to show the beauty of this country and why all its inhabitants are proud to call The Gambia their "Home".

Please remember that this is only a 6-minute video and primarily depicts village life. This video doesn't even come close to capturing all that can be found in The Gambia.

Thank you to Haruna Jallow, Fatou Sowe, Lamin Jabbi, and Momodou S Jallow for their testimonials. Thank you to Panchang (my host village) for providing the vast majority of the visuals found in this edit and for caring for me like family during my two years there.

Sareh Wuring School

Last year, 2019, Gambia Rising began working with a team of three Gambian teachers to create a structure for their school. The school had been established but, at the time, they didn't have a proper structure to hold classes. I had the privilege of visiting this school on three separate occasions: once in August, when they were still building the new structure, in September, when classes had begun but materials were still lacking, and in October, when they had desks and various other materials needed for teaching. I captured moments from each of my visits to show the process, the work, and the care that was put into the creation of this school.

The work that Gambia Rising is doing has an incredible impact. Be sure to check them out at https://www.gambiarising.org.

Sutukoba

A cultural festival in the village of Sutukoba. Sutukoba is located in the URR (Upper River Region) of the West African country, The Gambia. The villagers are primarily from the Mandinka tribe. This festival is put on for them to express their culture and share their traditions with the next generations, as well as, to act as a homecoming for all the villagers who now live in the capital area to work. Such traditions include wrestling, dancing, drumming, Kankurangs, post male circumcision ceremonies, a mock wedding ceremony, pottery making, farming, and socializing with loved ones and friends.

a day

One of the winning films in the 2018 Peace Corps global film contest. The criteria for the contest was to create a one-minute video depicting a day in the life of a Peace Corps volunteer. In this video, I followed James Dillon III for a day in his riverside village located in the Lower River Region of The Gambia.
